Nipigon - Canada’s Crossroads to Land and Lake Adventures

Nipigon is a natural visitor destination anytime of year. Nestled against a backdrop of dramatic landscapes and the world’s largest freshwater lake, Nipigon has a wealth of activities to offer all ages, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

The Paddle-to-The-Sea Park is Nipigon’s newest attraction. Located in the heart of the downtown, this world-class children’s park leads families on a journey through the Great Lakes, following the renowned story of the Paddle-to-The-Sea children’s book by Holling C. Holling. This classic story was captured by famous Canadian canoeist Bill Mason in his Oscar nominated National Film Board production, Paddle-to-the-Sea.

The interactive story is told through the eyes of a young First Nations boy and features hands-on experiences of discovery and adventure for children.   Paddle-to-The-Sea Park is an engaging expression of Nipigon’s close historical and cultural connection to the land and the lakes.  Today, just as in the pages of its storied past, Nipigon is a legendary outdoor playground for adventures on both land and lake.

You'll find many suggestions of where to visit and stay on our website www.nipigon.net If you would like to talk to a Nipigon Tourism representative, please contact us at 1-877-596-1359 and we will be happy to assist.

Land Recreation

Nipigon has walking trails to suit every age, fitness level and time period. The Red Rock-Nipigon Hiking Trail offers a short 20 minutes walk along the Nipigon Marina but also connects to challenging hikes that lead to scenic cliff top lookouts. For the more adventurous, the area offers countless day-use trails that head deep into the wildlife inhabited woodlands of Ruby Lake Provincial Park and the Lake Nipigon Basin Signature Site.

The Nipigon region is also home to some of the best and most accessible rock and ice climbing adventures in North America.  Ancient towering cliffs can be found just 20 kilometres north of Nipigon at the Pijitawabik Palisades of Orient Bay. The Palisades are one of the oldest and most impressive geological sites in Northwestern Ontario and are set against a backdrop of thunderous waterfalls and unique wildlife species.

For those looking to experience what a true Canadian winter is all about, Nipigon’s alpine landscapes and trails create an exhilarating winter wonderland for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, winter camping and back country snow shoeing activities. Experienced local outfitters provide guided outdoor adventures to visitors all year round. Choose your adventure, do one, do two or do them all!

 Annual Events

Nipigon hosts several major festivals and events throughout the year. No matter what season you visit Nipigon, you’ll find a festival for you.

The Nipigon Blueberry Blast, held during the long weekend of August, is a favourite for families. The bus goes picking every morning and visitors always return smiling with buckets full of blueberries. The festival features a parade, live entertainment, an exhibition, fish fry and clowns for the kids. Contact Gina Barnes (807)887-3701

Pedal hard, pedal long in the 3rd Annual Epic Adventures Mountain Bike Festival on Saturday, August 14, 2010.  The format is an 8-Hour endurance race, in which each solo rider or team completes as many laps possible around a technical and extremely fun local mountain bike trail in an 8 hour time period. www.epicadventures.com

The Nipigon Fall Fishing Festival draws thousands of visitors every Labour Day weekend with fish derbies, softball and exhibition grounds during the day, and live entertainment in the evenings. Visitors return every year from across Northwestern Ontario and beyond. www.fallfishingfestival.ca

Nipigon Marina

Located on the most northerly point of the Great Lakes, above the 49th parallel, the Nipigon Marina is the perfect jumping off point to explore the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area and the deep majesty of the Nipigon River. The Nipigon River is the largest tributary to Lake Superior and famous for offering a century of world class fishing. Take time to view the ancient First Nations rock paintings that mark the cliffs over the river. The Marina offers diesel fill up and showers, pump out services and overnight docking. Visitors are invited to collect a certificate from the Mayor of Nipigon to recognize that they crossed the 49 th Parallel as they travelled up the river.

Home of the World-Record Brook Trout

Some of Canada’s most impressive freshwater fishing action starts on the Nipigon lakes and rivers every spring. This is where you’ll find some of the biggest brook trout in the world as well as walleye, salmon, sturgeon, and lake trout. It’s easy for both new and seasoned anglers to get hooked on the quantity and size of the Nipigon catch and it’s a truly unique fishing experience that lures anglers back to Nipigon time and again.

The Nipigon River itself is a year-round fishery and is considered one of the best brook trout rivers in North America, as well as one of the most scenic fishing destinations in the world for a shore lunch. Here, the unparalleled beauty of the wilderness surroundings and the cool crystal clear waters totally enhance the fishing experience. Local professional guides are skilled and knowledgeable on the local rivers and lakes, providing you with a safe and exciting fishing adventure that will leave you wanting more!

Other popular on the water action in Nipigon includes sailing, kayaking, canoeing and diving.

Discover what real sailing is all about on Lake Superior’s wild open waters. Secret coves, freshwater beaches, islands and imposing cliffs with ancient rock paintings are fast becoming a water haven away from the crowds for international boating and kayak enthusiasts alike.

Paddlers can also loose themselves for days and weeks exploring the dense forests, wetlands and shores of the Nipigon River, following the routes once taken by the voyageurs to Nipigon Lake and its hinterlands.

Be Part of Our Landscape

Visitors to Nipigon can't help but want to be part of its natural landscape. Walk, cycle, or sail through it. Fish it. Climb up or down it. Sit back and admire it. Ski, snowmobile or canoe across it… With such diverse adventures waiting to be discovered, Nipigon is clearly the best that nature has to offer.
